Electro-Acoustic Dubcology - I - IV
The title that refers to ecology: German Ãâkologie : Greek oikos, house + German -logie, study (from Greek -logi?, -logy). 1. The science of the relationships between organisms and their environments. Also called bionomics. 2. The relationship between organisms and their environment, a recording style made popular in Jamaica in the early 1970's called dub and the practice of Acoustic Ecology, studying the relationship, mediated through sound, between human beings and their environment. The recording and composition processes are a combination of acoustic-ecology, electro-acoustic and dub sound practice.
Electro Acoustic Dubcology I (2007)
Source recordings from the Cornell Plantations, Arboretum Trail, Pond and Zucker Shrubs. Summer of 2007. Originally I planned to heavily process the sounds and render them to a drone to accompany listeners as they walk about the arboretum. Sort of like a live field recording mash-up. At the end I decided not to process them this way but use it as a narrative, mapping my movement through what was then known as the "plantations". It is now known as the Cornell Botanic Gardens.
Electro Acoustic Dubcology II (2009)
This piece is an electro-acoustic composition based on a sound walk of the neighborhood of the Hungryman gallery. The recordings will then be processed transforming the source material into a composition. What I am doing in Electro-acoustic Dubcology II is a subtle versioning of environments and experiences in order to uncover people’s understanding of landscape and how they relate to it. From these recordings I will execute a “versioning” of my collection of sound experiences of the neighborhood. The recording was made available as a podcast and CD and came with a map of the area. The listeners were encouraged to walk the same route as I have which will be on the map. The sound walk experience should serve as a remix or mash-up of two sound experiences I would liken these experiences to image/after image or sound/echo.
Electro Acoustic Dubcology III (2009)
Electro-acoustic Dubcology III is a four channel sound installation for the Lincoln Park Conservancy. The installation is based on field recordings taken from the park and surrounding community. The recordings were processed transforming the source material into a composition. I had performed a series of sound-walks where I recorded spaces and places that make up the character of Lincoln Park, Lincoln Park Zoo and the surrounding community. From these recordings I executed a 'version' of my collection of sound experiences of the Lincoln Park neighborhood. The composition/installation explored the sound/image of the community through the recording, editing and processing of sounds of the Lincoln Park neighborhood.
Electro Acoustic Dubcology IV (2012)
Recorded for installation at Re-Invent Gallery in Lake Forest, IL. I recorded a brief soundwalk of downtown Lake Forest, including the Metra station, Market Square and Open Lands Park. These recording offer a brief description of the sonic character of Down Town Lake Forest. Through electro-acoustic process, I have made a version of this experience and installed it in a Zen-like garden of speakers and electronics. This piece explores the relationship between sound and space, where I create a new space from familiar sounds.
