Washington Park Sun Ra Sound Walks

Washington Park Sun Ra Sound Walk - Map Washington Park Sun Ra Sound Walks: This project's setting is at Washington Park in Chicago, IL USA. It was designed by American Landscape Architect Frederick Law Olmsted in the 1870's. I have captured the sound character of this place through field recordings. Along with the ecology, I have recorded activities and events at the park. My inspiration for this project is Sun Ra and his pamphlets he handed out while he was preaching in the park in the 1950's, along with other black speakers of diverse religious and political persuasions. Using the Radio Aproree application, I am presenting an audio palimpsest of Washington Park. I have recorded readings of Sun Ra's broadsheets taken from The wisdom of Sun-Ra: Sun Ra's polemical broadsheets and streetcorner leaflets , Ra Sun - John Corbett - WhiteWalls – 2006, on-site in several locations, recording of my walks including picnics, events like the African Fest, walks...

Images from Dubcology IV Installation at Re-Invent Gallery

Electro-Acoustic Dubcology IV Such Places, Re-Invent Gallery, Lake Forest, IL July 2012            For this installation, I recorded a brief sound-walk of downtown Lake Forest, including the Metra station, Market Square and Open Lands Park. These recordings offer a brief description of the sonic character of Down Town Lake Forest. Through electro-acoustic process, I have made a version of this experience and installed it at Re-Invent in a Zen-like garden of speakers and electronics. This piece explores the relationship between sound and space, where I create a new space from familiar sounds.  http://soundcloud.com/normanlong/electroacoustic-dubcology4

Home Knowledge Sound Walk

Home Knowledge Sound Walk Performance Home Knowledge Spectacular, North Branch Projects, Chicago, IL, March 2012 These are the recordings from the sound walk. From the program: Norman Long a workshop on Silence and Listening. I'd like to make a presentation about how we perceive and define space and place through sound. I will do this by organizing a sound walk of the area of the North Branch projects. We will be experiencing the neighborhood through listening. Our route will take us through the commercial area on Lawrence, The North Branch of the River, Eugene Field Park, Gompers Park and the residential points in between.  Many local residents may be familiar with what the neighborhood looks like. I would like for them to focus on how this area sounds, what sounds define this neighborhood and their relationship to this area via sound.

Toronto Soundscape 2006

Toronto Soundscape 2006 This is an audio sketchbook for an electroacoustic piece featuring sounds recorded from Church Street in Toronto in October 2006. These pieces will make up a electroacoustic composition based on these recordings. I was inspired to work on these recordings after I had seen Mark Bradford 's paintings at the MCA Chicago.
